SPECIALIST MENTORing

Providing consistent and reliable support

We provide Specialist Mentoring and Study Skills Tutoring to ensure that you have access to a consistent, reliable support system throughout the entire duration of your studies.

What is a non-medical helper?

Your specialist mentor, also referred to as ‘non-medical help’ or ‘Support Worker,’ is awarded to you if you are deemed eligible for this service in your DSA assessment. By assisting you with your mental health and wellbeing, the Support Worker will identify the barriers affecting your academic journey and develop strategies tailored to you to ensure these barriers are easier to manage and overcome.

There are two types of Specialist Mentoring which we provide:
· Specialist Mentor (Mental Health)

· Specialist Mentor (Autism Spectrum Condition)

By working with a dedicated mentor, you’ll gain valuable skills and techniques designed to enhance your overall well-being.

Specialist Mentors can teach you how to:

  • Manage your anxiety and stress.
  • Develop organisational skills.
  • Create structured daily routines and habits.
  • Communicate with university staff and tutors.
  • Enhance communication skills.
  • Form and maintain effective relationships.
  • Improve your confidence and self esteem.
  • Identify barriers resulting from diagnosed conditions.
  • Develop practical strategies to overcome barriers to learning.

We aim to support you in every way that we can

Whilst this is not a therapy service, and we cannot diagnose individuals, our fully qualified and trained Support Workers can help manage the challenges that arise from your conditions. What we offer is a collaborative relationship – an unbiased, non-judgemental dynamic where you can speak in confidentiality about any concerns or worries you may be dealing with. The YorLinc Support Workers are extremely knowledgeable and also specialise in signposting students to various other services if needed. We aim to support you in every way that we can.

Very helpful, able to not only discuss ways to study better, but also more general social issues I might face at uni.

They have been helpful as they have provided me with a space to discuss my worries and struggles and given me ways to move forward.

My specialist mentor is consistently keeping me on track with my work and ensuring my well-being is in good shape.

It’s allowed me to talk about things that have worried me and challenged me, which we then discuss together so they don’t seem as overwhelming.
