NMH – Study Skills Tutor (Specific Learning Difficulties)

Provide one-to-one Study Skills support for students with Specific Learning Difficulties. Help them develop essential study skills, overcome barriers, and become independent learners.

About Role

  • Specialist Mentors support students in higher education to address barriers to learning created by their Autism Spectrum Disorder. 
Barriers to education can include concentration and motivation issues, managing academic workloads, peer relationships etc. The role of the Specialist Mentor is to provide highly specialist, one-to-one tailored support to assist students to develop both psychological and practical strategies to manage and overcome disability-related difficulties they experience whilst studying.
  • Specialist Study Skills support is not subject specific however, course materials can be used as a framework for planned support.
  • Pay rate is between £32 to £35 an hour.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To deliver Specialist Study Skills sessions in accordance with DSA and YorLinc guidelines.
  • Plan and implement specialised, tailored support based on students’ individual disability-related issues.
  • Record management and completion of documentation relevant to Specialist Study Skills sessions e.g., time sheets, individual support plans etc.
  • Represent YorLinc in a professional manner and comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Regular supervision and CPD.

Essential Requirements:

Applicants must have professional membership with one of the following:

  • The Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS) – Full or associate membership
  • British Dyslexia Association (BDA) – Full professional membership
  • The Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education (ADSHE) – Professional membership
  • Dyslexia Guild –
  • Associate Member (ADG)
  • Associate Member (ADG FE/HE)
  • Member (MDG)
  • Fellow (FDG)

Successful candidates will have experience of supporting students with Specific Learning Difficulties in Higher Education, knowledge of how SpLDs impact learning and an understanding of the strengths that students with 
SpLDs can bring to an academic environment.
